From the 28th to the 29th of December, I’ll be attempting to ride 500km around Herne Hill Velodrome in London. That’s over 1,250 laps! To say I'm nervous about my legs, bottom, and brain is an understatement.
If you know me, you’ll know that I'm community minded. Since moving to Coventry and joining the triathlon club, I've seen how important building a strong community is. I went from knowing basically no one, to seeing people I knew and could chat to in my area, lifelong friendships, people who are there to support you no matter what. I even had my cycling bestie offer to drive to Heathrow airport to search for my missing bike when it failed to make it on my flight!
That’s why, alongside Friends of Herne Hill Velodrome, I’m also fundraising for Choose Love, a charity that provides essential support for refugees and displaced people across the world.
When people are forced to flee their homes, they don’t just lose their possessions or livelihoods, they lose their communities. The networks of care, comfort, and connection that many of us take for granted are torn away. Choose Love steps in to offer dignity, support, and hope where it’s needed most.
As I ride those 500km, surrounded by the strength of the communities I’m lucky to be part of, I’ll be reflecting on those who don’t have that same support, and doing what I can to help.
