On 27th December I will set off on a 500km ride, raising money for the RNLI and Herne Hill Velodrome. That’s 1,112 laps of the velodrome in under 28 hours. It’s going to be a long, wintry night…
Why the RNLI
I’m raising money for the RNLI in memory of Lesley Clark, my partner Aiden’s mam (mum for the southerners). She was an old punk, a ska kid and part of the Northern Soul scene. She was a mental health nurse, and scuba diving was her life outside of work. This year marks 20 years since she passed away in a scuba diving accident at St Mary's Lighthouse in the North East - where the RNLI from Cullercoats were involved in the rescue of her and her diving friends. Now more than ever, the RNLI needs our support. It is a volunteer-run charity that saves lives at sea, no matter the circumstances.
Why the HHV
My second charity, and the stage for this challenge, is the Herne Hill Velodrome. It’s a special place for me. Growing up, I truly hated and avoided any form of physical activity, and it was HHV where I discovered my love of cycling. Over the last 14 years HHV helped me build the skills and confidence to pursue all of my cycling adventures, and for that I will be forever grateful.
My target is £1000, split equally between both charities. Any support will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks so much!
