This December, I'm taking on the Festive 500 Challenge – riding 500km in one go to raise money for two charities: Friends of Herne Hill Velodrome and Wheels for Wellbeing.
Why I’m Riding
I've occasionally done things on the bike that have prompted people to ask if it's for charity, to which, I've always had to respond, no, I just really love doing this stuff, it would be wrong to ask for money. This undertaking, with the sleep deprivation, potential for awful weather, and the (let's face it) monotony of all those laps, finally feels worthy of some fundraising!
I'm riding for two local charities. Firstly, Herne Hill Velodrome, which has given me so much since I started riding there over ten years ago. I'm hoping the peace I can find during a two hour Sunday women's training session will extend to a 27 hour effort.
My second charity is Wheels for Wellbeing. They're a small local charity doing amazing things to make riding bikes accessible to everyone. I volunteered with them at the velodrome when I was re-training as an Occupational Therapist, where I learnt so much about all the different types of bikes and how they can be adapted.
Since I qualified I have started working in neurological rehabilitation and I never miss an opportunity to recommend adapted cycling to people who are trying to build up their activity levels, or get back to doing a hobby, sport or mode of transport that they love.
This ride will be far and above my longest to date and I'd be hugely grateful for any support you can offer.
Thank you so much for your support!
