500 km around a 450-metre track in just over 24 hours. 1,112 laps. “Why?” I hear you ask. To raise money for two important causes: EXTOD (Exercise for Type One Diabetes) and Friends of Herne Hill Velodrome (FHHV).
I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) in Nov '24, aged 35. Before then, I was a bikepacker who dabbled in endurance riding. I knew almost nothing about diabetes or its 24/7 impact. T1D is one of the most demanding conditions to self-manage. I threw my hat into the F500 ring because this is a challenge I have chosen, separate from the challenge of living with T1D. Exercise is hugely beneficial for people with T1D, but also complex. I had to relearn how to ride while managing insulin, glucose and nutrition and the very real fear of getting it wrong.
Why EXTOD and FHHV? EXTOD brings together professionals, researchers and people living with T1D. Its mission: no one with T1D should be excluded from exercise. Yet 53% of adults with T1D fear low blood sugar during exercise, and fewer than one-third of sports coaches have received training. EXTOD aims to break down these barriers. Their guidance gave me a practical toolbox for managing my blood sugar around exercise and the confidence to get back on my bike. I’m raising money so others can receive that same support. Similarly, FHHV welcomes riders of all ages, abilities and backgrounds, keeping cycling accessible to as many people as possible.
I’ve done things on a bike that have made people question my sanity, but this time I’m bringing diabetes along. It will test everything I’ve learned since my diagnosis and working with EXTOD. Your support will help more people with T1D exercise safely and help FHHV continue building its cycling community. I’m looking forward to the inevitable witching hour somewhere in those 500 km, when all the riders will probably go a little bit insane. :)
