This Christmas I'm cycling 500km (!!) in one go around Herne Hill Velodrome
That is Brighton to Newcastle, but around a velodrome (outside) (whatever the weather may be in December). 1112 laps.
I'm doing this in aid of The New Normal Charity.
The New Normal are a free peer support charity that connects people through their grief and mental health. They aim to change the way we discuss our grief, mental health and well-being in open and honest spaces. Nobody should ever feel isolated, and there is always somebody who will relate to your story.
My own story goes back as long as I remember, being diagnosed with depression was a life changing moment for me. There is no standard image of depression, as I have learnt from experience.
For those of us with high-functioning depression, the people around us may not know that we’re suffering, we “look ok”.
We are good at hiding our pain and doing what we’re supposed to – but, as a result, we fly under the radar and can feel even more alone.
I know from experience that without the support of friends who noticed changes and encouraged me to see a doctor, I don't think I would be in position I currently am.
The New Normal have been helping people through life’s difficult moments for over three years now- facilitating conversations between individuals who find themselves in very similar positions.
Professional help may not be available, TNN provide a cheaper, more relaxed alternative. Their spaces are all free, open and non-judgemental.
From Volunteering for TNN, I can see first hand the impact they have - 'If there's one, there's two'.
